WORTHLESS currency is not necessarily useless. It can be a pointed
way of shaming someone who asks for a bribe. That is the thinking behind
zero-rupee notes, an Indian anti-corruption gimmick now attracting
worldwide interest. They look roughly like 50-rupee ($0.80) notes;
people are encouraged to hand them to corrupt officials, signalling
resistance to sleaze.
Vijay Anand, founder of 5th Pillar, an anti-bribery campaign that
launched the notes, calls them a “non-violent weapon of non
co-operation”. His group has distributed more than 2.5m since 2007. The
idea is catching on: campaigners from Argentina, Nepal, Mexico and Benin
have been in touch asking for details. Malaysia is mulling a similar
project. And a worthless note will be launched in Yemen next year.
Yemen is usually reckoned to be one of the world’s most corrupt
countries. But Mariam Adnan, an activist there, says a new generation
may be amenable to change. Her group is handing out 5,000 “honest
riyals” in schools and universities. “You have to change minds before
you can change laws,” she says.
Such campaigns might be risky in countries where bribes are extorted
at gunpoint. But in places where public opinion is already shifting,
they could be a useful way of making bureaucrats behave better. Shaazka
Beyerle, an expert on civil resistance campaigns, says that using the
zero-rupee note offers protection. It shows a person’s affiliation with a
larger movement which cannot be brushed aside by one angry official.
Dear HDNP International family,
On
behalf of HDNP International, I would like to express our gratitude by
thanking our contributors and volunteers for supporting us throughout
the 2013 year.
With
your generous donations for our international and local food programs we
have fed nearly 600 people world wide. Our October 2013 Feed Nepal
Campaign provided food and warm jumpers to the Katmandu Children's
Orphanage and gave nourishment to the homeless in the surrounding
cities.
For
December 2013, we established our first Carter Blood Drive to help
provide blood provisions in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We do have
future plans to sponsor this event bi-yearly.
HDNP
International is a beginning charity and we have much to learn and do
for our community. For the 2014 year we intend to create a "Feed
Arlington Program" for the homeless and struggling. The details are
being worked out for this program and how to implement it. We are also
focusing on programs to help sponsor local families in need, provide
a much needed food pantry for the Dalworthington Gardens and West
Arlington area and create job and self help programs.
Our
charity began with helping the Nepalese people. We intend to keep to our
mission promise to donate bi-monthly proceeds to the homeless, the
elderly and orphans of Nepal. An American dollar truly stretches
in Nepalese Rupee so we can provide more finical assistance to the
Nepalese people.
HDNP
International hopes to grow in our local community and extend throughout
the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We cannot do this without community support
or donations.
We have much to share with you. Won't you consider helping today by volunteering or donating today with us?
With many blessings to you and your family this holiday season,
Suzan Walker

KATHMANDU/ As the country braces for the Constituent Assembly elections, the National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC ) and Unicef Nepal have expressed concerns over potential misuse, manipulation and engagement of children by political parties in pre- and post- election campaign s.
In a joint statement on Wednesday, the constitutional human rights body and the inter-governmental organisation mandated to promote and protect children's rights have reiterated and reminded all actors, particularly political parties and state structures in charge of elections, about general principles relating to child protection and children's involvement in political activities, as stated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989.

DOHA: Three Nepalese construction workers were killed and 13 injured when a minivan carrying them hit a side wall after a tyre burst on Salwa Road yesterday.
The incident happened in the afternoon in a newly-opened tunnel on the road, it was learnt. The vehicle was carrying 16 workers.
The driver was an Egyptian, and all other workers travelling in the van were Nepalese. They were returning from their worksite in Doha to their accommodation in Al Sailiya, one of the injured Nepalese workers told The Peninsula last evening.
The dead have been identified as Krishna Raj Banshi, Paspal Dhamal and Brijnath Pandit, all between 35 and 40.
“We were returning from our worksite in Bin Mahmoud around 4.30pm. After we entered the tunnel, a tyre burst and the driver lost control of the van, which then broke a steel divider on the road and hit the wall,” said the worker, who suffered minor injuries.
The van took several turns on the highway, before hitting the wall. One of the dead was tossed out of the van and was probably run over by it. The other two died apparently after hitting the steel body and the bars of the van with severe force.
All the others in the van were injured, at least five of them seriously. The victims included a foreman, besides the Egyptian driver.
“The ambulance team arrived in 10 minutes and we were all taken to the Emergency Department (of the Hamad Medical Corporation). Six workers including me were discharged later and we are expecting another two to leave the hospital by tonight,” said the worker.
He was speaking from his accommodation in Al Sailiya, where he was staying with some other workers involved in the accident. He came to Qatar last month to work as a mason with the company.

Working as a newspaper reporter was a dream job for Rochelle
Gilken, but that changed as the years passed and the industry shifted
gears. "The pay left a lot to be desired, and the stress - oh boy! I
have two kids, and I have to say that I couldn't balance home and work
and be happy due to the stress," says Gilken, who spent six years as a
crime reporter for the Palm Beach Post.
Of course, low
pay and high stress are part of a reporter's job description, but other
changes led to Gilken's decision to change industries. "I had
aspirations to get bigger and better newspaper jobs, but the opportunity
to climb the ladder disappeared as newspapers cut back, which was very
discouraging," says Gilken. "I always wanted to travel to cover the big
stories, like the Olympics, but the money to allow for that just wasn't
there and wasn't coming back," she says.
Ever-shrinking newsrooms,
dwindling budgets and competition from Internet businesses have created
very difficult conditions for newspaper reporters, which has been
ranked as this year's worst job, according to the CareerCast.com Jobs
Rated report.
Consumers can access online news outlets almost
anywhere thanks to technological advancements, which are threatening the
existence of traditional print newspapers. As a result, the number of
reporter jobs is projected to fall 6% by 2020, according to the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), while average pay is expected to
continue its decline.
Jobs Rated Links
And for those still employed as reporters, the job's demands are all-consuming.
"I
covered crime, so when breaking news happened, I had to be there. And
when editors called at night with questions, I had to take the calls,"
says Gilken. She adds that while many reporters feed off the stress,
once they have families, the stress takes a toll. Gilken now works in
media relations for the Florida Water Management District in West Palm
Beach, and says the hours and stability are welcome. "They're very
supportive of their employees to have a work/life balance, which
reporters really never have."
Social media marketer Paul Gillin founded NewspaperDeathWatch.com in 2007 when the newspaper industry was at a peak. The website tracks newspaper closures and cutbacks around the U.S.
“We
didn’t see newspapers respond [to consumer changes] at all,” says
Gillin. “I saw that once [the decline] hit, it would hit very hard and
very quickly.”
The Newspaper Association of America, via the Pew Research Center,
estimates that the industry earned approximately $49.2 billion in 2006.
By 2011, that total had dropped by well over half to $23.9 billion
taking many jobs with it, including thousands of newspaper reporter
positions.
Editor & Publisher reports a steady
decline in the number of daily newspapers since 1985, when there were
1,730 in circulation. The industry held steady near 1,450 in the
mid-2000s, but closures in the latter half of the decade left the nation
with a low of 1,382 dailies.
Some prominent dailies migrated to online models, such as, The Ann Arbor (Mich.) News, which publishes twice weekly. The New Orleans Times-Picayune transitioned to a three-times-weekly newspaper in 2012. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer became online-exclusive in 2009.
Of
course, newspaper reporters have fared poorly in the Jobs Rated report
for years due to the job's high stress and tight deadlines, low pay and
requirement to work in all conditions to get the story. But journalism
is not a dying art, nor is reporting a profession without prospects.
Rethinking the industry has made reporters adapt.
Gillin says
online reporters – a different job from the newspaper reporter as ranked
via Jobs Rated – have better prospects, but unfortunately that
profession provides a lower wage and the requirement to produce more
content at a much faster rate, which increases stress.
Door-to-Door Bad Jobs
Technological
advancements negatively impacted other careers ranked as the worst jobs
of 2013. Among them are meter reader and mail carrier. Meter reader is
one of the most rapidly shrinking career fields, expected to decline by
more than 10% in the next few years. In the utilities industry, power
companies are increasingly implementing remote readers, which digitally
transmit electrical usage from the consumer’s residence to the
provider’s database.
Mail carriers are expected to fare even
worse. With consumers relying heavily on email and text messaging, the
traditional form of snail mail communication is dwindling. As such, the
BLS reports that the number of mail carrier jobs will fall by 26% in the
coming years. The government’s plan to cease post office operations on
Saturdays isn't helping.
A much different career path ranks second
overall in the worst jobs of 2013: lumberjack, one of the most
dangerous professions in the entire labor market. Sixty-four lumberjacks
reportedly died from work-related injuries in 2011. Having to work with
heavy, dangerous machinery contributes to lumberjack fatalities, as
does the typically isolated locations in which lumberjacks work.
Distance
from hospitals also poses a major risk. The same is true for oil rig
worker, another job ranked among the worst jobs of 2013, where physical
danger and injury are constant threats.

for the exploiters and oppressors is lighter than a feather." (‘Serve the people’, 8 September 1944)
Though he gained power via election, defeating a
former beauty queen, Chávez struggled relentlessly to implement social reforms,
by constitutional means, to improve the lot of the working people.
He did so in the teeth of the fierce opposition
of the wealthy Venezuelan bourgeois elite, who had originally penned the constitution
to serve their own interests.
There can be no doubt that Chávez numbered among
the great revolutionary spirits of his time. His name is rightly associated
with those of Fidel and Raul Castro, Evo Morales, Daniel Ortega and other
Latin-American revolutionaries. Many of his followers considered he followed in
the footsteps of their great revolutionary hero Che Guevara.
He strove to liberate the masses from poverty and
US imperial domination; to serve the people and to arm them politically and
organisationally.
A hero of the
masses
For
this reason, he was loved by the Venezuelan working masses, and for the same
reason he was hated by the wealthy comprador capitalist elite and their media,
who ceaselessly connived and collaborated with the US imperial goliath against
his presidency and his government.
If it was the ballot box that brought Chávez to
power, it was also the bullet -- the threat of the revolutionary violence of
the oppressed, whose representative he undoubtedly was -- that maintained him.
It was the great love and popular support of the
Venezuelan masses for Commandante Chávez, and the loyalty of the rank and file
of the Venezuelan military, that frustrated the CIA’s illegal coup attempt in
2002.
For the US imperialists, although bogged down in
their colonial campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, never ceased to regard all
Latin America as their ‘back yard’, their ‘lebensraum’, their ‘natural’ colony
to exploit, and they ceaselessly conspired with the local elite to depose
Chávez.
An enemy of
imperialism
The imperialists and reactionaries never forgave
Chávez for his nationalisation of the great oil and mineral resources of
Venezuela; for his social and medical programmes to improve the health and
lives of Venezuelan people based upon this national wealth; for his successful
and creative advocacy of socialist principles.
Nor did they cease to rage at his practical,
economic and political cooperation with communist Cuba, and with the popular
progressive and anti-imperialist governments in Bolivia, Ecuador, Honduras,
El-Salvador, Zimbabwe, north Korea and elsewhere.
When
he successfully campaigned to change the constitution to tip the balance of
power to benefit the poor, their anger rose to fever pitch.
As we mourn our fallen hero, therefore, we pledge
also to redouble our efforts to defend the values and that Comrade Hugo Chávez
upheld.
Imperialists all over the world will no doubt be
rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of rolling back the popular gains
in Venezuela. We must remain vigilant, in opposing the attempts to recolonise
Venezuela and Latin America.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Hugo
Chávez’s family, comrades and supporters, and a final red salute to our fallen
comrade!
